NO ART FASHION, Roggel, the Netherlands
Site-specific installation of paintings and drawings made 2020–2021
These paintings and drawings were made between 2020 and 2021, a time of deep personal change. I painted in close connection with my own body, but not as something personal. I wanted to see the body as a reflection of collective body consciousness: whole, ancient and sacred, with a memory of its own. Much of the work looks at the interior of the body, especially the womb, as a portal of creation.
The installation was at NO ART FASHION, a former fashion store for plus-size women, from the 1970s. The paintings hung together with oil on copper and wood, mixed-media works on paper, and wooden toddler cradles. Used as sculptural elements, the cradles suggest confining enclosures. In that shop the inner world of the body met the outer world of clothing and display. The space turned the body inside out. What I had painted as soft, complex and vulnerable began to look like a dress, something made to make the body “look better,” or to hide its truth.
Working with ritual, natural materials and embodied presence, I let the body speak. The installation became a soft protest and a quiet prayer: an invitation to return to the body as a living, breathing source of truth and wholeness, and not as an object.
